The First Thing Kindergarteners Learn Before Learning How to Read
As parents, we all know some of the basic skills students will learn in kindergarten, such as reading, writing, shapes, and numbers. But there is
New Summit’s Part-Time Homeschool program invites all home educators, regardless of where you live in El Paso county or what district you reside in, to become a part of our new program. This is open to grades 1-6 for the 2020-2021 school year, and offers an opportunity for academic enrichment that is content rich and includes fun activities and opportunities your child/ren will love. The program is in development and is looking at offering an opportunity for students to attend in-school at least once a week and participate in New Summit’s amazing positive school culture in partnership with the needs and goals of our home schooling families.
This mission will be accomplished via weekly classes where students will participate in hands-on, cooperative, group learning activities. Along with enrichment classes, families enrolled in the NSCA Homeschool Program will benefit from a curriculum lending library, periodic networking events and field trips for enrolled students and their families. This program will be a great benefit to home educators and homeschooled students in the New Summit Charter Academy community and throughout the wider Colorado Springs area.

Holly has been teaching for over 35 years. She has assisted with 5 charter school start-ups in the area and a few years ago she was a co-founder of New Summit Charter Academy. Her teaching experience includes homeschooling, charter schools, private schools, and mainstream public schools. In addition to instructing her own five children, Holly has taught gifted children, struggling students and everyone in between. She has enjoyed teaching preschool, elementary, high school, and college students.
Since the beginning of her career, Holly has been interested in helping students who struggle with reading. After receiving a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction, she was later trained as a Reading Specialist, and is now a Certified Academic Language Therapist. She loves to see reading progress in the students she supports and to come alongside families of those students. In addition, Holly loves to assist teachers in reading instruction.
For her, each student is a unique person with individual strengths and challenges. It is up to the teachers, Holly believes, to figure out how that students learns best and to deliver the appropriate instruction. One of Holly’s primary educational beliefs is that parents have both the ultimate right and responsibility for the training of their children. Schools exist, therefore, to support parents in this most honorable and significant task. Her belief that parents are the primary educators of their children make her a natural advocate for Homeschool Parents and students. Holly is looking forward to being part of the New Summit Charter Academy Homeschool Program and making a difference in the lives of students and families.
On a personal note, Holly has been married to Rick, a Colorado Springs Realtor, for 38 years. They have 5 grown children and 8 grandchildren. Holly, Rick, and their family moved here from Northern California about 30 years ago. They continue to enjoy the beauty and the people of the area. Above all else,
Holly’s family is her greatest joy. Holly enjoys spending her free time reading, knitting, and gardening. Most often, she is seeking opportunities to be with children and her family.
