We know many of you have asked for updates about 7th grade and Middle School and we are excited to add 7th Grade to the 2019-2020 school year.
During this time, we will continue to be a K-8 school with one school code. As we grow larger in the years to come, the Board of Directors can consider applying to the state for a “Middle School” school code and
This will not occur until we have met the student count needed for a separate Middle School. However, in our K-8 school, “Middle School,” will resemble some of the Middle Years’ programming and processes. We are able to offer up to 4 classes each of 6th and 7th grade this coming fall.
A team of staff and parents are working on the staffing model for 6th and 7th grade and what this will look like in addition to what we will be offering. We anticipate having content-specific teachers who are qualified in their content areas. Students will switch between the classes for their studies. We will be hiring more specials teachers to support the needs of our students in their elective studies and offering a possible Teen Leadership class through Capturing Kids Hearts in addition to more offerings in Art, Music, PE, and Technology. Extra Curricular opportunities are being developed as our Middle School program grows and also depends on the interest of those who are enrolled.
7th Grade Curriculum
We are currently working on the curriculum offering that will follow the Core Knowledge Scope and Sequence. You can check out what they will learn from this website. We have a team including staff and parents who are looking at the Math and English curriculum and who have been sent samples to look through.
We want to stress that the approaches to the curriculum are not changing. For example, we will still be using the Singapore Math approach to Math Mastery, we are looking at what curriculum to use with this approach. We are also going to be offering English Language Arts, which includes an online and unplugged version of the curriculum. Literacy first will still be a focus to help create a love of reading and learning to open the student’s minds to rich literature and discussions that come with the content.
When the Middle School Staff committee meets, they will discuss a few of the details of what the curriculum will look like for each subject that follows the Core Knowledge Scope and Sequence, but we assure you it will be comprehensive and engaging. We are sending a couple of staff members to a Core Knowledge conference next semester to gain more resources that will be helpful in building our 7th and 8th Grade program.
The group will also be going to visit a few schools in the state who have K-8 schools similar to ours and researching how the Middle School operations work. We will be hosting various information nights that are for new, interested families to gain more information and an opportunity to answer questions they have about the middle school. We also anticipate having 7th Grade-specific town hall meeting to answer questions from our committee. Please keep your eye out for this date. We are excited to have the opportunity to continue to serve your family and student as they move into 7th Grade!
