Two decades after its first charter school was launched, Academy School District 20 will get a second charter school. The five-member school board unanimously approved New Summit Charter Academy’s application Oct. 19.
The school will open next August for kindergarten through sixth grade and will add one grade per year. “It’s been a long process, and we worked really hard to get to this point,” said Rick Van Wieren, chairman of the organizing committee.
On Thursday night, the D-20 school board gave conditional approval for the New Summit Charter Academy to open in fall of 2018.
New Summit Charter Academy board chairman Rick Van Wieren said for 20 years the only charter school in that district has been The Classical Academy (TCA). He said parents want another choice because the wait list to get into TCA is so long.
